Horchata is a wonderful, milky drink filled with the rich flavor of cinnamon.
Horchata brings me back to my childhood and fun filled summer days. At family events or at a good Mexican restaurant with friends, I would fill my plate with spicy foods and top it off with salsas. My face would be on fire. Horchata would come to my rescue! The drink is basically a milk made from rice and it would ease the spice off my flame filled tongue.
Where can you get it, you ask? You can find this luscious drink at most Mexican restaurants and sometimes at fairs or farmer’s markets depending on where you live. If you can’t find any near you, it’s super easy to make! Even if you can find it without problems, try making this drink! It’s wonderfully satisfying and a lot cheaper than buying it.
Grab your blender and some long grain rice and cinnamon sticks. Place everything into your blender along with 5 cups of water and blend until the rice and cinnamon are somewhat ground up.
Your mixture should look something like this. Let this soak for about 8 hours or overnight in the fridge. The longer you let it soak, the more flavor your horchata will have. Once that’s done, blend once more. Then, using a sieve or cheesecloth, strain the mixture and collect all the rice and cinnamon bits. This will help remove some of the chalky flavor and will prevent it from being grainy.
Pour the horchata into a pitcher and add your sugar and vanilla. Mix well.
To add a little flair to your drink, at a touch of cinnamon to the top!
Serve cold alongside some delicious spicy foods!

1 cup of long grained rice
2 cinnamon sticks
5 cups of water
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 c sugar

In a blender, add your rice, cinnamon sticks, and water.

Let this soak for at least 8 hours or overnight. The longer you soak, the better your horchata will be.
After soaking. Blend once more. Using a sieve or cheesecloth, strain the drink into a pitcher removing the rice and cinnamon bits. This is an important step so don’t skip it! You don’t want your drink to taste too chalky or grainy.

Do you rinse rice before blending?
ApronWarrior says
Hi Monica,
I do a quick rinse just to make sure there are no stones or other things left in the rice. If you don’t that works fine too!
